A Letter to Prospective Guides

Museum Guide Overview | Museum Guide Application

Spring 2006

Dear Friend,

I am pleased that you have expressed interest in the Museum Guide Program at DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park. Museum Guides are extremely important volunteers for the Museum in that they help children and adults understand and appreciate contemporary art. Museum Guides offer tours of the Museum’s changing exhibitions, the Sculpture Park, and off-site exhibitions that travel to area schools and community sites.

The role of a Museum Guide is the most public position at DeCordova Museum. Guides serve not only as educators in the galleries, but also as the Museum's most visible ambassadors. The entire staff, therefore, looks upon this voluntary contribution of time and energy with a great deal of respect.

We select Museum Guides for their demonstrated interest in art and for their ability to work with people. The Museum Guide program is one of continuing education. It provides an opportunity to learn about contemporary art with every changing exhibition while, at the same time, providing the considerable rewards gained from interacting with a broad range of people.

A description of the program and the nature of its commitment is described in the Museum Guide Overview. The next Guide Training course will begin in October 2007. If the program seems appropriate to your interest and schedule, I would appreciate your filling out an application and mailing or emailing it to me. Interviews will be scheduled in the summer. In the meantime if you have any questions, please call me at 781/259-3632.

Very sincerely,

Susan Diachisin
