Intertidal Overflow (detail), 2006, acrylic, color pencil, and ink on paper, dimensions variable, Lent by the Artist
Rydz creates elaborate, large-scale drawings on scrolls of paper that she installs in gallery spaces. Her flowing narratives are descriptions of change, movement, transformation, and adaptation. They feature architectural-biomorphic forms that speak of hybridity as an inevitable mechanism that affects the intertwining relationships of environment, body, and memory.
"The event of an overflow occurs when a container has reached its absolute capacity, causing a spill over into unexpected terrain. I am interested in this space of the overflow, the malleable matter that becomes incorporated into new environments.
My work is made up of a multitude of micro and macro habitats existing simultaneously within dynamically changing landscapes. I see these landscapes as being effected by an extremely powerful force of gravity that pulls them towards one another until they melt and morph, linking fragments together into new conglomerations. These interconnected worlds within worlds are fluid and in constant fluctuation. They are without clear borders or definitions, yet they retain the mechanisms of their nucleus and individuality. Leaving traces of their routes, the accumulated lines within my drawings become a part of endless cycles of fragility and vitality as they travel back and forth through the skin of layered topographies." —Evelyn Rydz
