Curatorial

Curatorial Internship - Fall Semester 2009

Curatorial Interns at DeCordova engage in a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities as they participate in the day-to-day operations of a contemporary art museum and sculpture park. Interns work closely with staff curators and registrar, and help to install exhibitions, update collection files, maintain records, organize daily office operations, and conduct art historical research related to exhibitions or the permanent collection, which includes studio visits with artists.

Interns are integral to the success of the curatorial department and as such, they are fully integrated into the work environment. Interns observe and participate in a variety of department and inter-department brainstorming and organization meetings and learn the structural, strategic, and operational decisions at play in a contemporary art institution.

Specific responsibilities for the fall 2009 semester intern will tentatively include, but are not limited to, work on publication logistics for brochures to accompany the Platform series —a new project space series debuting in fall 2009 with artists Andrew Mowbray and Eric Hongisto—and the first DeCordova Biennial, execution of loan agreements for the DeCordova Biennial, which includes twenty of New England's most talented artists, implementation of new programs for the Platform series, and research for the summer 2010 exhibition, and accompanying catalog, of work by pre-eminent contemporary sculptor Chakaia Booker.

The curatorial staff at DeCordova seeks a self-motivated art history graduate student with specific interest in contemporary art and future career goals to work as a curator in a contemporary art museum. Applicants should have strong organizational abilities and computer skills, including literacy in the Microsoft Office Suite and scanning and image software. Prospective applicants should be aware that the Curatorial Internship is an unpaid, volunteer position and because public transportation does not service DeCordova, a car is a must. The Curatorial Intern for the fall semester must commit to 2, 8-hour days/week minimum, with the ideal being 3 days/week.

Interested individuals should send a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to Koch Curatorial Fellow Nina Bozicnik. For further information, contact Nina at 781-259-3627 or at curatorialfellow@decordova.org.
