Ornamental Art III
The Store @ DeCordova
May 5 - May 19, 2002
Reception: Sunday, May 5, 2 - 4 pm
Lincoln, MA- In a continuing effort to promote the very best work by the region's premier artists and designers, The Store @ DeCordova announces Ornamental Art III, the third exhibition to celebrate work by three jewelry artists new to The Store's collection. Join us on Sunday, May 5 from 2 - 4 pm for a reception introducing the delightfully innovative craftsmanship of Mary Ann Babula, Tom Odell, and Erica Rosenfeld. The exhibition and sale continue through May 19.
Mary Ann Babula of Cambridge creates strikingly beautiful necklaces and earrings that incorporate bold, contemporary lines. Skillfully layering colored and clear glass, Babula then cuts and polishes it for dramatic optical effect. Babula's mastery of the material allows colors and shapes to appear and disappear depending upon the angle of the light.
Cape Cod-based artist Tom Odell uses intricate and abstract combinations of precious metals, pearls, and gemstones that have a contemporary yet timeless quality. Odell relies on traditional metalsmithing techniques enhanced by labor-intensive Japanese metal-layering work for the creation of his elaborate pins, earrings, and necklaces.
From Erica Rosenfeld of Brooklyn, NY come luscious squares of confetti-colored glass encased in frames of tiny glass beads. Rosenfeld then fashions these sparkling morsels into necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings that call to mind rows of fantastical candy.
"The Ornamental Art series celebrates the overwhelming number of artists that craft jewelry from complex processes and unusual materials," explains The Store @ DeCordova Manager David Duddy. "The opportunity to publicly share the best artists who apply their skills to wearable art is important to DeCordova's educational mission."
The Store @ DeCordova will host an exhibition of new jewelry from May 5 - May 19. A celebratory reception for the artists will be held on Sunday, May 5 from 2 - 4 pm at The Store. Call 781/259-8692 for more information.
