DeCordova’s 21st Annual
Art in the Park Festival and Art Sale
Sunday, June 11, 2006 from 10 am to 5 pm
LINCOLN, MA—Kick off the summer by spending it outdoors at DeCordova’s 21st Annual Art in the Park Festival and Art Sale! Peruse and purchase unique, handmade artworks by over 100 New England artists, who were selected for their original high-quality designs. Let your creative impulses flow by participating in art activities including wire art, T-shirt painting, funky hat making, and more! Enjoy culturally rich performances that feature funk, country, Flamenco, and calypso music, as well as a comedic juggling act and audience participation.
Art in the Park is free for Members and Corporate Members; $12 for adults and children 15 and up; $10 for seniors and children 2–14; age 2 and under are admitted free. Admission includes entry into the Museum. No passes are accepted for this event, and no pets are allowed.
All parking is free and at Reservoir Place in Waltham (Exit 28 off of Route 128). No parking will be allowed on the DeCordova grounds or in Lincoln. Instead, Boston Properties will provide free parking at Reservoir Place, located at the Trapelo Road/Lincoln exit (Exit 28) off Route 128/I-95. Doherty's Garage in Lincoln will provide free shuttle service between DeCordova and Reservoir Place from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.
Since DeCordova began Art in the Park in 1985, it has evolved into one of the largest outdoor art sales in Greater Boston. Over 100 of New England’s finest artists and artisans are selected for their original high quality designs. A variety of artwork in a range of prices will be for sale, including paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and photographs. Visitors will also find one-of-a-kind crafts in both contemporary and traditional styles, including ceramics, hand-blown glass, furniture, jewelry, fiber art, and more. Art in the Park Festival visitors will enjoy a day filled with music, children’s performances, hands-on art activities, and food. Hands-on art stations for both children and adults will be located throughout the Park. Among these activities are:
- T-shirt Painting: Experience the fun of wearable art by creating a one-of-a-kind painted T-shirt with fabric paints! $5 per T-shirt.
- "Make Dad a Card" with the Gropius House: Using multi-media, create your own greeting card for Father's Day.
- Mad Hatters: From ages 2 – 99, everyone will make their own artistically inspired funky hat.
- Phat Pots!: Decorate a peat pot with tempera paint, pastels, and pride! Take it home, plant a seedling, and watch it grow.
- “Stained Glass”: Design your own “window” or bookmark using transparent tissues and your creative sense of style.
- Wire Works: Get wired making a sculpture or jewelry from
ever-bendable recycled communications wire. - All activities are free with Festival admission unless otherwise noted.
Each year, DeCordova strives to find experienced and emerging regional musicians and performers to entertain, delight, and amuse Festival visitors.
Scheduled Performances:
- 10 am to noon: Flexible Flyers String Band
Performing bluegrass, old-time country, and western swing, Flexible Flyers String Band captures acoustic styles on twin fiddles, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and string bass. Add their harmonious vocals, and this band is sure to please! - Noon – 1 pm: The Jim Show
A DeCordova favorite, Jim’s wit, charm, and athleticism will wow you—and that’s before he even begins to juggle. The Jim Show is guaranteed to amaze and amuse. It’s a dangerously funny stunt comedy experience. - 1 – 3 pm: Wildest Dreams
Wildest Dreams’ band members hail from South America, the Caribbean, Japan, and the U.S. The group creates an exciting world beat style featuring powerful vocals, contagious rhythms, and a message of harmony that blends elements of Afro-pop, reggae, calypso, and soul. - 3 – 4 pm: blue number nine
Mixing jazz, funk, r & b, blues and rock with a warm vibe and lots of energy, blue number nine draws an audience into a musical world of sound, movement, and joy. - 4 – 5 pm: Steven Spungin (with Flamenco dancer)
Steven Spungin’s music “is a perfect balance between the head and the heart, combining the spontaneity of jazz, the technique of classical, the melodies of international folk, and the rhythms of dance.”
Roaming Performances:
- 10 – 11:30 am: Big Nazo
The surreal larger-than-life 3-D creature creations of Big Nazo will roam the Sculpture Park creating a wave of hilarity and in their wake. Bring your camera! - 1 – 2:30 pm: TEN31 Productions, Inc.
The living statuary of TEN31 Productions, Inc. astounds and delights visitors of all ages. Look for the butterflies at this year’s Art in the Park!
When their appetites strike, visitors can choose from a variety of food and drink options. Art in the Park features a multitude of culinary delights—everything from Middle Eastern fare to mouth-watering barbecue to cooling frozen treats, in addition to a wide array of appealing vegetarian and gourmet lunch items. Vendors include Amir’s Caterers, Dave & Jerry’s Specialty Foods, Dylan & Pete’s Ice Cream, Ray’s Kettle Korn, Sweetest Memories, and T&D Concessions. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunches.
Art in the Park is supported in part by the Burlington, Groton, Harvard, Littleton, Pepperell, and Weston Cultural Councils, local agencies supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. General Information
DeCordova Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 am to 5 pm and on selected Monday holidays. General admission during Museum hours is $9 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, students, and youth ages 6–12. Children age 5 and under, Lincoln residents, and Active Duty Military Personnel and their dependents are admitted free. The Sculpture Park is open year round during daylight hours. The Store @ DeCordova and the School Gallery are open Monday through Thursday, 9:30 am to 7:30 pm, Friday through Saturday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Sunday 11:30 am to 5:30 pm. The Café @ DeCordova is open Tuesday from noon to 3 pm, and Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. Free guided public tours of the Museum's main galleries take place every Thursday at 1 and Sunday at 2 pm.
