Photographs of Children from the DeCordova Permanent Collection
Arcade Gallery, Photography Study Space
February 2 – April 27, 2008
Exhibition Opening: Saturday, February 9 from 3 -5 pm
LINCOLN , MA —DeCordova’s collection of photography is numerically the largest category of the permanent collection, with now over 1200 images. The collection has grown substantially over the last twenty-five years through the generosity of donors and artists, as well as through Museum purchase. Many of the works selected for this exhibition and in the collection as a whole were the generous gifts of Arlette and Gus Kayafas.
This exhibition was chosen to complement Presumed Innocence: Photographic Perspectives of Children. Highlighting works from DeCordova’s collection on the same theme, the show includes images from the 1940s through 2006 by 26 photographers. These images fall mostly into the realm of documentary photography. They range from the street photography of Jules Aarons and Charles “Teenie” Harris, both of whom photographed in the decades surrounding mid-century in city neighborhoods, to Matt Swarts’s photographs of children with cancer, and Rania Matar ’s recent image of children and adults in war-torn Lebanon .
For images, please contact Corey Cronin or 781/259-3628.
