DeCordova Installs Site-Specific Artwork by Local Artists in Cambridge

DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum has installed a new site-specific public artwork in the windows of a Cambridge office building. The installation, part of deCordova’s corporate art loan program, features 12 hand-dyed textile works and 12 oil paintings by collaborative artist team Annie Blazejack and Geddes Levenson. It will be on view at 1 and 101 Main Street, Cambridge, until January 2019.

The site-specific installation was requested by deCordova corporate member CBRE New England, located in Kendall Square’s Riverfront Office Park. The corporate program team at deCordova facilitated the loan—selecting the artists for the specific space, connecting them with CBRE New England, and assisting with the installation itself. This is the seventh site-specific installation at this property as part of deCordova’s corporate art loan program.

The window display consists of 24 separate artworks: 12 colorful textile works by Geddes Levenson installed in front of 12 oil paintings by Annie Blazejack. While the designs on the hand-dyed textiles are abstract, the oil paintings feature more traditional scenes and characters. Holes are cut into the fabric to allow viewers to discover the hidden, veiled paintings—creating an interactive experience and inviting new perspectives.

“We’re happy to have facilitated this unique art installation for the Cambridge community,” says Sharon Glennon, Director of Corporate Relations and Art Loan Program at deCordova. “We hope commuters and passersby enjoy the color and whimsy it adds to the neighborhood, and we thank the artists and corporate member CBRE New England for making it possible.”

Additionally, deCordova facilitated a site-specific art display by Antoinette M. Winters for corporate member BioMed Realty at 210 Broadway, Cambridge. This work features a sprawling arrangement of neon Mylar “crochet” drawings and painted doilies, installed on the wall inside the public lobby. It will also be on view until January 2019.

DeCordova’s corporate art loan program provides corporate members the opportunity to exhibit artwork of both established and emerging contemporary New England artists directly in their offices. The original artworks available for loan are from deCordova’s permanent collection and over 200 lending artists.
