Ziek honors the history and complexity of the global weaving traditions in which she trained, while reconceiving of the craft as a contemporary art practice. A leader in the field and devoted educator of Jacquard loom processes, she creates lustrous woven textiles that offer unusually high thread counts. Many of her woven compositions are based on digital scans of hand-written notes and the elaborate numbering systems that help her keep track of the complex counting of threads and rhythms of her weaving process as seen in her series Rift, on view in the Biennial.
Ziek earned a BFA in textile design from the University of Kansas, Lawrence and an MFA in fiber from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI. Her work has been exhibited at the American Craft Museum, New York, NY; the Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA; and the Museum of Art and Design, Helsinki, Finland. She has held numerous teaching positions, including Associate Professor of woven design at Philadelphia University and Assistant Professor of textile design at the University of Kansas, Lawrence.
