Junior Instructor | the hive

Learning & Engagement
DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA, is seeking volunteers ages 15 and older to assist our experienced instructors with our summer camp, the hive. The program is designed for children ages 5–12 who are curious about the world around them and interested in exploring nature and contemporary artistic ideas through energizing collaborations in deCordova’s 30-acre site. Daily activities might include visual research in the Sculpture Park and in the Museum galleries, investigating flora and fauna on the woodland trails, designing animal architecture, making nature-based drawings or sculpture, or constructing a lost underwater town on one of deCordova’s lawns. Join us as we reveal, conceal, unravel, shatter, deflate, and dissolve while exploring themes from time travel to underwater worlds. The goal for each uniquely-themed week is to build large-scale, collaborative projects inspired by artists in deCordova’s outdoor and indoor summer exhibitions, such as Dewitt Godfrey, Letha Wilson, Ian McMahon, Jong Oh, and Saul Melman.

Junior Instructors are involved with instructors in the planning and development of small group activities and large group projects and are responsible for: providing support for group instructors throughout the day, looking out for the safety and well-being of each participant, providing support and encouragement within your small group and the larger program, helping with setup, cleanup, and materials, and serving as a positive role model. The ideal candidate will have experience and interest in working with children, excellent communication skills, and a collaborative spirit. Art skills are not necessary– curiosity and creativity are at the heart of the program.

We are seeking applicants for two-weeks July 9–20 and/or July 23–August 3. The camp day runs 9:30 am–4:30 pm each week day with a half hour extra on each end for setup and cleanup.

These are volunteer positions that are eligible for community service hours and come with a stipend of $125 per week. Please note that public transportation does not reach deCordova and you must be able to provide your own transportation to and from the program.
